The Ahamdiyya Community bought the land on 29 March 1996. Foundation stone laid by Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad (4th Caliph) on 19 October 1999. The Mosque was Inaugurated by Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad on 3 October 2003. The opening ceremony was attended by over 600 guests; those present included High Commissioners, European Parliament members, Members of Parliament, Mayors of London boroughs, councillors and representatives of 17 countries.
The Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden, Surrey is a landmark building. It was voted as one of the top 50 best modern buildings in the world by ‘The Information’ a supplement magazine to ‘The Independent’ newspaper. The mosque is the largest mosque in Western Europe and accommodates up to 16k worshippers, including halls. The dome is 16 meters in diameter and the tallest minaret is 35 meters high. The flooring inside the mosque is covered with 38,700 square feet of carpet.
Fire Redevelopment (2015)
John McAslan + Partners were selected to develop the proposals for the reconstruction, which include a new wing and more courtyard space. In 2017, demolition work followed by the removal of the old foundations took place. The new Foundation Stone was placed by Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad on 4 March 2018. The month of April 2018 was set for reconstruction work with the expectation of the new building to open and function within two years.
